6.5x40mm Caseless

Description

Standard assault rifle cartridge ued by the Republic armed forces. The caseless cartridge is designed to work in weapons that use electric or mechanical firing systems. In the event of a dud, the cartridge is ejected from the weapon just like a traditional spent casing. The cartridge has been designed with many different purposes in mind, all of them fulfilled by the illustrated ammunition types.
The cartridge is designed to fire a 6.5mm projectile at effective ranges of about 400m, making it an intermediate assault rifle cartridge. The bullet is designed to have enough terminal velocity and energy to punch through light obstacles and body armor. The ballistics of the round allows it to have relatively little drop in ranges of 300m and beyond.
Even though the cartridge is caseless, the cook-off temperature (the temperature the barrel reaches after continuous fir in which a cartridge prematurely fires) is close to the melting point of the bullet itself, thus making a premature firing a near impossibility under normal circumstances.

The bullet types presented are: Full metal jacket and variants; Armor piercing and variants; special purpose cartridges; and practice ammunition.

---FMJ---

Ball - Standard range, energy and penetration.

Match - Added added range and accuracy. Used mainly by sharpshooters.

Frangible ball - Meant against soft targets, where overpenetration and perforation are not desired (considered illegal on most "civilized" worlds). The round disintegrates almost immediately after penetration into small shards and dust.

---Armor piercing---
Even though AP ammunition can pierce most armored vests and suits in the market, total perforation of a target is relatively rare.

AP - Is a jacketed round with a dense soft metal mantle with a high-density rigid core.

API - Armor piercing incendiery for small-scale demolition or sabotage

APDS - Flechette for pin-point armor piercing. Capable of penetrating a half-an-inch of high-strength alloy. Usually reserved for accuracy weapons.

---Special purpose cartridges---

Tracer (an IR tracer, to be exact)

Incendiary - Burns at 3000K for three seconds. Useful as a sabotage round.

Explosive Tipped - Used primarily against solid (usually non-armored) targets, e.g. walls and other structures. Can be also used in a limited (albeit frowned upon) armor-piercing role.

---Practice ammunition---

Blank with all the bark and no bite,

Practice cartridge uses a solid-mass bullet of either paintball material, or an "energy packet" which knocks the target unconscious (see "Intar" from Stargate SG-1). Practice ammo can be used either as non-lethal riot ammunition.

RENOVATION
20.06.2009
Finally got this vectored! The bullets are slight modifications of the cased versions. The measurements should this time be accurate (depending on how the image shows on different resolutions). Did away with the chem round.
