Fictional Soviet Sun Bunnies

Description

Finally got this one done. This has been one of my more long-standing projects with hunting for samples through the net and screen captures from the movies Red Dawn and Rambo III.

The pattern was designed for the movie Red Dawn and is based on the contemporary soviet KLMK pattern. I do not know what level of source material the props and costumes department had on soviet camo suits at the time, but looking at the close details suggests that they were unaware of the stairstep design or purely bicolor nature of the real Sun Bunnies pattern. From a distance (and especially on screen) the pattern is a very close match to the real thing, but closer details reveal completely different blob shapes and the presence of a third color, possibly trying to emulate the effect stairstep edges have on shapes. Also between the darker blobs they added rainstripe streaks, as this was standard issue in the Warsaw Pact.

Overall the pattern they made is a very believable attempt at copying the real KLMK and a good exercise of knowledge in contemporary camouflage, not to mention another bit of proof of extremely high production values that Red Dawn had when it came to making believable soviet military equipment either through vismods or direct fabrications.

I present the complete pattern on the top left and versions with KLMK color schemes for the sake of comparison.

Thanks a lot! Your variations may be of great use for me. "Beriozka" was sufficiently effective camo at some terrains (I clearly remember half-hour seeking of a jacket lost somewhere on a grass meadow :-D ) Moreover, it allowed to distinguish the border troops from the army personnel during the everyday garrison duties. It was sort of tragedy for all the veterans of the border service when the production of "true" pattern was cancelled in mid-90's. The new, "commercial" variant doesn't reproduce the colors correctly, and the textile itself is more soft but far less durable thаn the old long-fiber cotton.
