German Bundeswehr Zelttarnmuster

Description

This was an interesting project.  Had to make two reconstructions before vectorization: the base pattern and the overprint.  This pattern uses one overprint pattern in two colors instead of multiple overprint patterns.  The shapes are in the style of Leibermuster, with the topmost pattern having black flecks and dark grey transparent branches.  The second overprint is of uniform transparency and subject to seasonal coloration.

The base pattern is formed of a splinter pattern with lots of roller slip between the primary color areas, with smaller tan blob shapes with their own slippage.

There are three or four base pattern color schemes: one for autumn and at least two for summer (high and low contrast).  I made an equalized summer scheme, in case it was a case of manufacturing differences instead of deliberate differences.

There are also three color combinations for the overprints, with different transparencies (marked with percentages): 75% black + 75% red, 80% black and 80% dark green and 60% black and 70% brown.

Seasonal variations have grey-green base combined with the black and red overprint for autumn and winter; and green base and black and green or brown overprint for summer.

This pattern was never officially made into combat uniforms, but improvised helmet covers have existed and the fabric was used in the motion picture A Bridge Too Far with the german soldiers.

The only general purpose item of camouflage to make it into the Bundeswehr supply system during its early years was a reversible Zeltbahn (shelter half). Possibly created by combining elements of both WW2 Wehrmacht and SS pattern camouflage designs, the BW Zelt-tarnmuster is nevertheless a fairly unique design. One side (Sommer/summer) consists of black, dark olive & tan amoebic shapes over a splintered background pattern of light and medium olive green, while the other side (Herbst/autumn) features black, russet & tan amoebic shapes over olive green & beige splintered pattern background. Although custom-made helmet covers were made, the only officially-produced item in either pattern was the shelter, which could additionally be worn as a poncho with a detachable hood that also served as a carrying pouch for the folded zelt. This pattern is often called amoebatarn or German "amoeba" pattern.

For some reason, the makers of A Bridge Too Far chose to have German SS camouflage uniforms made out of legitimate 1950s era German Army reversible "amoeba" pattern camouflage shelter material. The pattern has little relationship with any German wartime camouflage, but was perhaps cheaper or more easier to obtain at the time than reprinted fabric in an authentic pattern.

==================kamouflage.net==================

Introduced in 1956, Bundeswehr-Zelt-Tarnmuster ('Bundeswehr tent camouflage pattern') appears to be a hybrid of wartime Waffen-SS and Wehrmacht designs, with irregularly-shaped blotches printed over splinter elements reminiscent of Heeres-Splittermuster 31. It is the only post-war German pattern to feature reversible spring and autumn colorations.

All the evidence suggests that this pattern was never intended for use on anything but the Zeltbahn, although field-improvised helmet covers were frequently made from Zeltbahn material.

In spite of the fact that Bundeswehr-Zelt-Tarnmuster is a postwar camouflage pattern, it was used to make up the helmet covers and smocks worn by Waffen-SS soldiers in the movie A Bridge Too Far.

This is one of the earliest patterns I started showing serious interest in, as seen with my Type 2 pattern.  Only recently I thought of trying it again with my current skills and understanding of camo.
