M08 Greatcoat by Tounushi M08 Greatcoat by Tounushi
m/08 Service Greatcoat. A standard greatcoat for the Class A uniform. Rank is indicated by pins on the shoulder straps and cloth pads on the cuffs. Black leather gloves are worn with the coat. The cloth of the coat is water-resistant, easily breathing and heat-retaining, while it feels like natural wool. During colder weather, various additional uniform items are worn

Design based on the russian/soviet army greatcoat. (Say what you want about them, the SOBs knew style.)

You and Seth45 are brilliant. I love the simple style of the art - it gets the point across, nothing flashy. But your descriptions do it even more justice because they are plain men of action, not fancy words.

I have two elementary questions: What is the RSS about, I mean the function? And aren't mercanaries in a army, which equips them even with uniforms, normal soldiers?

The RSS stands for Republic Special Service. The RSS started as a guardian division for the Government apparatus (Presidential office, Senate of Worlds and the Republic Parliament). The training turned them to the ultimate elite soldiers. The RSS was also named the Seraphim Order (guardian angels of the Republic). Some military and political leaders noticed their effectiveness, so they also took on the mantle of special forces that had previously existed (Rangers, Delta, SEALs etc.).

Mercenaries operate under two modes of contract: Mission-based, where mercenaries are hired to accomplish a task; and Contractual Period, where entire mercenary units are established for a certain periods of time (usually two-year tours). (got the inspiration from Area 88) As such, when contractual forces mingle with other forces behind the lines, or with civilians, they wear republic-issue uniforms and rank insignia.

OK, thanks. Your RSS by the way reminds me of my own SWORD.
How small the world of ideas can be... but in my idea it's almost the otherway round.

I have to admit I haven't checked all that much about SWORDS, but RSS, or Seraphim Order is like sci-fi Templars. They have gone beyond a military order, taking up traditions and rituals not found in any other military arm. They have taken also retroviral enhancement, giving the soldiers a pair of wings, turning them into "angels." The serum also extends the lifespan of the recipient, a necessity since it takes a REALLY long time to get promoted in the RSS without participating in high-risk assignments.

I don't really get what you mean "checked all that much about SWORDS". SWORD is for Special Weapons Operations and Reconnaissance Division. My very own idea for a special unit. They were founded as in instrument for internal "conflict resolution". Only known by the highest politicians but during the war of 2008 became a regular army unit but still independent from the high-command. (might be a bad example but probably like the Waffen SS during WW2) An elite force with the best equipment and soldiers upgraded with biotechnology almost like cyborgs. But almost extinguished during the anti-SWORD campaign 2013-2017. Revived by the last officers traveling trough the time to prevent this fate.

There ware two branches in SWORD: the officers that carry out the mission and also give the orders and the enlisted and NCO's that are doing the administrativ works.

You might have noticed that all this is alternative reality.^^

Indeed.
I also thought of the RSS as a "benign" version of the Waffen-SS: an elite force totally loyal to the state. Actually the RSS has sworn a solemn oath to protect the Senate, the Constitution and the Laws of the Republic. They all must memorize the Constitution, the articles of Law and the articles of War. Individual soldiers can disobey their superiors if they feel that a given order violates the Constitution or the Articles. They are loyal to All and to No-one. No single person or "the man behind the desk" holds power over them. They are the ultimate protectors of the Republic.
They are so elite, that even Jedi (yes, my sci-fi has jedi) have trouble getting in. They constitute about 0,5% of all republic military assets (member state's militaries not included), yet they still count in the millions, scattered across the galaxy.

Stop looking around in my head! I mean we are almost thinking the same about our unit. My soldiers are also not following one politician on the top but are fighting to protect the republicaln principals. But in contrast to your RSS my SWORD has to work against the law, because sometimes it is important to protect the state of the state himself. In a country with 80 Million citizens there are only about 1500 Soldiers and 500 NCO'S and enlisted. They usually work alone or in small groups of maximum 3 soldiers in big cities.

So SWORDS is a super-covert military? RSS is diversified: Counter-Terrorism, hostage situations, surgical strikes, espionage, sabotage, elite heavy-hitters in the traditional arena. You can face them in the dark corners of a city, and you can face hundreds of them mowing you down on the front lines. Their combat mandate is similar to the USMC: small units doing covert operations AND large-scale brigade/division engagements.
Even though the RSS is elite, their full authorisation is locked behind a glass cabinet in the presidential office, reading "break in case of war." And I mean WAR. Huge, galactic-scaled war. During relative peacetime they are used in small operations, never more than a battalion in the same system. Even a company more would be overkill.
These guys are unimaginably elite: a trained operative with his weapon of choice can engage whole companies long-range, or a platoon close-range (i mean melee-range). Remember Batman Begins "You can fight six men, we can engage you to engage 600." Each soldier knows at least seven styles of martial arts, and mastered at least four of them. They are familiar with all republic-issued weapons and the most circulated member-state military weapons.
